Elden “Sonny” B. Holmes, 79, of Hermon and formerly of Norridgewock, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, in Bangor, Maine. He will be loved always and forever. He was born May 22, 1935 in Farmington, Maine, the son of Verna Williamson Holmes. He grew up on a farm in Mercer, Maine. He graduated from Bloomfield Academy in Skowhegan, Maine in the class of 1953; he then earned a two year business degree. Elden married Yolande Berry on March 4, 1955 in Norridgewock, Maine. Together they raised their family in Norridgewock and Brewer. Just a few years ago they moved to Hermon. Over the years Elden has worked for Norrwock Shoe Company as an Accountant, he then worked 23 years for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Sales, and he also spent 17 years working for DHHS for the State of Maine as the Head of Support Enforcement until his retirement in 1997. He spent more than 50 years as a Mason. He would read the newspaper front to back every day. He was an avid Red Sox Fan; he was also a coach and commissioner of the Little League when his children were young. He loved the ocean and lighthouses and traveling around the state of Maine and Maritime provinces. He will be remembered as being well respected and liked. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Yolande Holmes of Hermon, his five children; Kevin Holmes of Bangor, Kerry Holmes of Skowhegan, Korey Holmes of Veazie, Kenric Holmes of Hermon, Katrina Holmes Benjamin of Hermon, five grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and one on the way. He was predeceased by his mom, one son Kelly Holmes, two brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service that will be held on Saturday March 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Norridgewock, 32 River Rd., Norridgewock, Maine, with Pastor Nathan Richards officiating. A committal service will be held later in the spring at the Sunset View Cemetery in Norridgewock. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice.
