Obituary

Winslow – Arthur W. Berard, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta.

Arthur was born in Waterville on May 22, 1934, the youngest of twelve children born to Gertrude Mae Jolicoeur and François Joseph Berard Sr. He was a graduate of Waterville High School, Class of 1952, and proudly served in the United States Army.

Following his military service, Arthur worked for many years at Scott Paper in Winslow before retiring. He later worked as a shuttle driver for Central Maine Motors, a job he truly enjoyed because it allowed him to meet and talk with new people every day.

Arthur was deeply devoted to his family and treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed going for rides, dining out, visiting the casino, and spending summers at East Pond, where he played cards with neighbors and friends. Arthur was a lifetime member of the Waterville elks Lodge #905 and a member of American Legion Post No. 5.

Arthur was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Jean Berard; his beloved granddaughter, Haley E. Berard; and all of his siblings, Frank, Ralph, Fred, and Wallace Berard; and Theresa Bunker, Ruth Totten, Gert Gagnon, Honorine Lafreniere, Beatrice Poulin, Charlotte Doucette, and Germaine Berard.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Jeffrey Berard and his wife Judy of Oakland; Ronnie Berard and his wife Sherry of Winslow; and Penny Sears and her husband Archie of Winslow. He was a cherished Pepere to his eight grandchildren: Cameron Berard of Oakland; Ryan Berard of Bath; Adam Berard of Harlem, NY; Alex Berard and his wife Mackenzie of Watertown, MA; Joshua Sears of Sarasota, FL; Jacob Sears and his wife Leah of Vassalboro; Jordan Sears of Winslow; and Jamie Sears of Fort Myers, FL. He was also a proud great-Pepere to Asher, Colton, and Willow Sears.

In addition, Arthur is survived by his sister-in-law, Dianne Blicharski; his brother-in-law, Ronald Poulin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta for the compassionate and wonderful care shown to Arthur.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 116 Silver Street, Waterville. Burial will immediately follow at St. Francis Cemetery.
